Three months and 30 thousand words later, here is the final entry of the Daily Comic Book Coffee. One hundred is a good round number to end on. Perhaps it will return in the future. In the meantime, I’ll be starting another series of daily theme posts about a different subject.
One of my earliest entries was from writer Troy Hickman’s Common Grounds miniseries, so it makes sense to wrap things up with this cover by Argentine artist Rodolfo Migliari. The 1942 painting Nighthawks by Edward Hopper is an iconic image. Wikipedia describes it as “one of the most recognizable paintings in American art.” Hopper’s depiction of the late-night customers of a city diner has been the subject of numerous homages and parodies over the decades. It makes sense that Migliari would reference it for this series about a chain of coffee shops that cater to super-powered clientele.
Most of the characters seen on Migliari’s cover appear within in the stories written by Hickman. Not the alien, though. I figure he just stopped by for a quick cup of joe during a long, busy night creating crop circles.
Migliari’s pained covers have also been featured on City of Heroes from Image, Star Wars from Dark Horse, Blackest Night and Green Lantern from DC Comics, and Rogue from Marvel.
