Comic Book Cats, number 180: The Dandy Summer Special 1969

Comic Book Cats, number 180: The Dandy Summer Special 1969 front and back covers by Charles Grigg, published by D.C. Thomson in 1969.

It’s summer time! Let’s take a look at Korky the Cat, who is trying to enjoy the season by relaxing at the beach. Some mischievous mice have it in for Korky, but fortunately in the end all works out for our feline friend.

The Dandy was a British children’s comic book anthology published from 1937 to 2012. Korky the Cat made his debut in the first issue of The Dandy and was featured on nearly every cover until 1984. Korky continued as an interior feature until 2005.

Korky the Cat was created by artist James Crighton, who drew the strip from December 1937 to January 1962. Charges Grigg took over the Korby series in 1962 and remained on it until June 1982. He is regarded as the definitive artist on the character.

In addition to his three decade run drawing Korky the Cat, Charles Grigg worked on several other features for The Dandy, including Desperate Dan, The Red Wrecker and The Umbrella Man. Grigg retired from regular comics work in 1983 and tried his hand at drawing saucy seaside postcards for the Bamforth postcard company for a number of years. He passed away in December 2013 at the age of 97.
