With the release of The Rise of Skywalker movie, the saga is complete and now the story team is free to fill in gaps and give more information about critical events in the story. They start with Star Wars: The Rise Of Kylo Ren #1 which finally shows what happened at the Jedi Academy after Ben Solo “killed” Luke Skywalker and gives much-needed backstory to the Knights of Ren.
Writer Charles Soule does not play it safe either, in fact, he changes quite a few things that I thought that I knew about the events referenced in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. Things did not happen quite how I thought they would and important details are slowly revealed throughout the issue including that Luke and Ben both fought the Knights of Ren and that Luke not only knew of Snoke but also may have battled him.
We also finally get to meet some of the other young Jedi that Luke Skywalker was training, something that none of the sequel trilogies ever showed us or even talked about. Not all of them are killed during or soon after the confrontation between Luke and Ben and they are an interesting dynamic that I did not anticipate seeing when I picked up the comic.
The next couple of years should be a golden age for Star Wars comic books as the full Skywalker story has been revealed and now there are no restrictions or timelines that are off-limits. Well perhaps the time post The Rise of Skywalker will be untouched as we wait to see if there are more movies featuring Ray, Poe, and Finn but otherwise we should get plenty of exciting stories to fill our Star Wars thirst.
