Cotton 100% was originally released back in 1994 in Japan and is finally making it’s way to the west with this stellar release from ININ Games. I first discovered the Cotton franchise way back in 1991 when the first game was released for the TurboGrafx-16 on CD-ROM and it was such a nice change of pace from the usual shooters of the day. Its bright colorful graphics, upbeat soundtrack and adorable main character all stuck with me all these years later so a chance to play another game in the series was a welcome development.
You control the title character Cotton who is a young German witch who has an addiction to a candy called Willow and that’s is why she is battling through wave after wave of enemies. That’s right, she is not trying to save the world but is just trying to satisfy her sweet tooth, how cute is that. Cotton is accompanied by her companion Silk who acts as the satellite weapons that you may remember from my review of Grey Lancer a few weeks ago and provides some welcome extra firepower to her quest.
Do not let the cute graphics fool you though, this is still a SCHUMP from the early 90’s and as thus it is designed to be challenging and test the player reflex’s from the moment you start the game to the moment that you want to throw the controller across the room. That is where ININ Games additions come in. When you first start the game you can choose to play the original game or you can select to utilize modern features including rewind, savestates and (after you beat the game) various cheats. These are welcome additions to any SHUMP and kudos to ININ for taking to time to add them to their release. Cotton 100% is another worthy previously Japan only game that is finally getting some exposure in the States and gamers will find a lot to enjoy with this stellar release.
For those of us who are longtime Cotton fans (cough cough) I highly suggest you check out the amazing Collector’s Edition that was put out by Strictly Limited, it is and absolutely packed edition and is well worth your money. They will also be releasing actual SNES and Genesis versions as well for those true retro fans.
