This week I will look at “The Last Mermaid # 1” from Image Comics. It’s “The Little Mermaid” meets “I Am Legend” that’s guaranteed to be a good read.
The series focuses on a lone mermaid who roams an endless wasteland on a quest beyond reason. She must survive the interminable stretches between tiny pockets of water, the roaming bands of cybernetic cannibals, and the fearsome mutant beasts. The dystopian world that Derek Kirk Kim has created is both imaginative and breathtaking, making this the perfect series that stands out from the other “end of the world” stories that came before this, even if it starts off with little to no dialogue within each page it has that distinctive Disney/Pixar movie… except it cuts out the cutesy plot and delivers something unique since Kim has a background in Animation but the Sci-Fi components are a blessing in shaping story such as this one.
While this issue ends strong, it leaves us with questions that will hopefully be answered during the next few issues. Still, it does give us a story where an environmental disaster concept takes the readers on an adventurous romp rather than being a leftover plot from a Steven Segal movie.
