Batman: Dark Age # 1– Mark Russell and Mike Allred reunite for a series that remixes Batman’s origin and livelihood from the 1960s and beyond. Told from the perspective of an elderly Bruce Wayne, his upbringing feels more like a moody kid struggling after the death of his parents (which he wasn’t present for) with most of the more traditional aspects of this life being changed just for the heck of it; Fascinating story, but Russell probably took so many Batman troupes then mashed them together and put them in his script hoping that it would gel but it feels very out of sync. At the same time, the father/son dynamic between Bruce and Alfred has some realism but seems weird. Still, it’s a great read although it can’t hold a candle to some of the other innovative retellings of Batman’s earlier days that have come out throughout the years, it keeps you invested.
Miles Morales: Spider-Man # 18– The 300th issue finds Miles and his allies on a collision course against Agent Gao and her team of Cape Killers that in turn takes the action up a notch and the really “WOW” moments within this issue are sure to be a crowd-pleaser that will show everyone why Miles is truly deserving of being the true Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man even when the issue ends on a dramatic note (**NO SPOILERS**); It may not be a modern-day version of Amazing Spider-Man # 300 but it’s a celebratory issue worthy of your time.
Ultimate Spider-Man # 3– This series continues to be an absolute hit when it comes to giving the Ultimate Universe a fresh start while giving Spidey’s world a fresh remix that comes off as compelling and unique. The Spidey/Green Goblin team-up against Ultimate Bullseye is magnificent in the way that Marco Checchetto presents it in his art (He truly can do no wrong) and Jonathan Hickman’s scripts ramp up the fun factor that is a welcoming element to any Spider-Man title while serving as a main example of how to do a perfect restart.
X-Men ’97 # 1– The “X-Men ’97” revival series is a complete hit among X-fans, now it looks as if this new series is continuing that winning streak thanks in part to the show. Writer Steve Foxe does a wonderful job of taking the energy from the show and making it fit perfectly within the series, making this the perfect companion piece that feels both lively and entertaining but also reminds us that this is now the perfect time to be an X-Men fan. Highly recommend!
