The God of Mischief and Thor’s younger brother Loki finally takes center stage in his very own TV show set to launch in June on the Disney+ streaming service.
Loki, by design and character development, has always been in Thor’s shadow. It’s a vital part of his story and why he holds such ambivalent feelings towards the god of thunder. So it is fantastic to see Odin’s adopted son finally get his turn as the star of the show.
The idea for the show was first revealed at The Walt Disney Company 2020 Investor Day presentation. While scant little information about the show was made available in the immediate aftermath of that conference, Disney recently released a trailer for the show and announced its official release date, 11 June 2021, at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour.
It will form part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and share continuity with the films of the same franchise, which is an interesting choice considering Loki was killed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. The series will take place after the events of Avengers: Endgame and will follow the story of an alternate Loki that managed to create an entirely new timeline.
While it must’ve taken some long nights and tricky edits to find a way to write Loki back into being, it will surely prove to be a master-stroke by Disney. Even after several deaths and being portrayed as both a villain and an anti-hero, Loki is still a huge crowd favorite among the extended MCU characters.
His growth in popularity can also be seen in how he has been used in other media too. For example, when he first appeared in the video game series Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, he was a member of Doctor Doom’s Master’s of Evil, but by the third game in the series, Loki was a default playable character as one of the hero characters.
Loki has also starred in his very own standalone comic books in the form of the Loki series published between 2005 and 2011 and the Loki: Agent of Asgard series that was in print between 2014 and 2019. One person who is incredibly excited for the show to hit screens is the series’s visual effects supervisor Brad Parker, who believes Loki will be a wild ride that will defy any preconceived expectations viewers take into the show.
“Well, pretty much all I can say is that it is a crazy journey! It is another project that will defy expectations in a lot of ways. It’s been so much fun. It’s been on my hit list, to work on a Marvel project, and Loki is just such a great one,” Parker said, according to Screen Rant.
“It’s so cool, and there are so many amazing things that are going to happen in every episode. I can’t wait for people to see it. It’s a lot of hard work. We’re working furiously to make this thing as great as possible, and I think people are going to be thrilled when they see it.”
Tom Hiddleston will return to reprise his role as Loki, with Owen Wilson joining the cast as Mobius M. Mobius. At the same time, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Sophia Di Martino, Wunmi Mosaku, and Richard E. Grant will all also be a part of the cast but with as-yet-unnamed roles. Kate Herron leads the project as director, with Michael Waldron as head writer.
