Batman # 106– Spinning out of the “Infinite Frontier” one-shot is the start of a new era for The Dark Knight; Already, we’ve been introduced to a revamped (And frightening) Scarecrow that’s ready to cause fear (No pun intended) and a businessman named Simon Saint who unleashes his plan to the new mayor of Gotham for an efficient system since the former is not a fan of vigilantes and since “Joker War” was very explosive and changing the status quo, I feel like this new arc will bring even more changes for Batman’s world so as always, Batman is still another title worth your time.
BRZRKR (BEZERKER) # 1– Keanu Reeves (Yes, John Wick himself!) makes his comic book debut with this series that delivers big in terms of action (Lots of it) and intrigue. Co-writing this with Matt Kindt, the main character is a half-god/half-mortal who, after wandering the world for centuries, finds his calling as an agent for the U.S. government, fighting battles that most agents wouldn’t touch and let me go on record by saying that this issue will definitely have you asking yourself “What’s Next?!” as Reeves and Kindt really hit it out of the park with the story and the concept itself may be suited for the big screen (Or a streaming service) it works very well in print. And Bill Crabtree’s colors really make Ron Garney’s artwork shine, which is good since it really fleshes out the erratic inks that Garney is known for in his work. BRZRKR may not be for everyone but the non-stop action sequences will draw you in for all the action junkies out there and I’m proud to say that I would love to see more material from Reeves in the not too distant future.
Infinite Frontier # 0– I know that some comic fans might have fatigue from the numerous reboots that DC’s known for but I like how this special set-up future storylines for their titles and there are some elements here that any DC fan will enjoy (Although I don’t think Black Adam’s new moniker of “Shazadam” will be an absolute hit); The idea of Wonder Woman being accompanied by The Spectre is executed with perfection and after reading this (The last page will shock anyone) but going back to my earlier statement about fatigue from DC’s reboots, let’s hope this one will be even brighter….and stick this time without messing things up even further.
King In Black: Captain America # 1– Seems Marvel can’t get enough of pumping out these “King In Black” tie-ins but this one, featuring a character that I love is actually a great story. Seeing Knull try to mess with Cap’s mind had you wondering if it would take effect but the story itself showed that as always, you can’t break Cap’s willpower so this was great to read, and I have to say that I’m not a fan of the art being all over the place (It takes four artists to crack out this one-shot!?); But if you like a good Cap story then give this a try, because even when the odds are against him, a situation like this will always show Cap at his best.
Nocterra # 1– Scott Snyder and Tony Daniel deliver to us an epic new series that is an absolute hit right out of the gate. After the sun goes out, the world is plunged into an everlasting night and that it turns all living creatures into very dangerous shades, it looks like that the only way to survive is to be near artificial light. Snyder and Daniel waste no time in introducing us to Valentina “Val” Riggs, a ferryman whose job is to transport goods as well as people on some unlit roads in her eighteen-wheeler. Mixing horror with action and with Snyder and Daniel at the helm, I’m really excited to see what comes next and you know that it’s only going to be getting ever better ……and wild.
Sensational Wonder Woman # 1– It is a wonderful Wonder Woman story. It seems that Doctor Psycho has Diana in a weird fantasy world where she’s playing the part of a 1950s housewife so I’m really loving the “WandaVision” element getting fleshed out here and I definitely loving the appearance of Hawkgirl in this issue (Nothing like a good team-up to enhance the story); The creative team of Stephanie Phillips and Meghan Hetrick have brought us a story that will appeal to WW fans both old and new and would love to see more stories from this team.
